KOLKATA: Waking up to the sorry state of the state police's traffic management infrastructure, the state government has finally decided to hand over the EM Bypass from Garia to Dum Dum airport to Kolkata Police.
In the past three years, 40 accidents have been recorded on this stretch while many more have gone without police complaints being lodged.
Home secretary Samar Ghosh said the decision to hand over Bypass to Kolkata Police had already been taken and orders would be issued soon. A senior officer said the order is expected to be issued on Friday itself.
Already a portion of the EM Bypass from Parama Island to Ruby General Hospital crossing is manned by Kolkata Police.
As the Garia-airport stretch gets crowded, the state traffic police was finding it extremely difficult to man the road as it suffers from an acute lack of manpower.
