SONARPUR ASSEMBLY CONSTITUENCY

Sonarpur has a glorious legacy of peasant movement in West Bengal as well as in India.

After Left Front Government came into power in 1977 this area rapidly urbanized. A part of Sonarpur is now under Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality and other area under Sonarpur Panchayet Samity of South 24 Paraganas District.

Literacy level of this area is above average of the state. Many famous schools are located here like Narendrapur Ramkrishna Mission, Harinavi DVAS High School, Garia Barada Prasad High School, Garia Harimoti Devi Girls High School etc.

If we have a look in the previous assembly  election results, it is as follows:
1977 -  Gangadhar Naskar of CPI(M) won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Gourhari Sardar of Congress.

1982 - Gangadhar Naskar  of CPI(M) won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Ramkanta Mandal of Congress.

1987 - Bhadreswar Mondal of CPI(M) won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Sovaranjan Sardar of Congress.

1991 - Bhadreswar Mondal of CPI (M) won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Nirmal Mandal of Congress.

1996 - Bhadreswar Mondal of CPI (M) won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Nirmal Mandal of Congress.

2001 – Nirmal Chandra Mandal of Trinamool Congress won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Abha Mandal of CPI(M).

2006 - Shyamal Naskar of CPI(M) won the Bidhan Sabha seat defeating Nirmal Chandra Mandal of Trinamool Congress.

Record shows that CPI (M) has a strong hold in this bidhan sabha seat.

Due to delimitation Sonarpur has two assembly constituencies - Sonarpur Dakshin and Sonarpur Uttar.

This time Shyamal Naskar contesting as Left Front nominated CPI(M) candidate from Sonarpur Uttar constituency.

Left Front nominated CPI candidate Tarit Chakraborty contesting from Sonarpur Dakshin constituency.
