KOLKATA: The state urban development and irrigation department officials held a meeting at Writers' Buildings on Tuesday to discuss how to expedite work on Tolly's Nullah desiltation with the help of Metro railway and KMC officials. The irrigation department will also reportedly start a Rs 40-crore project to desilt Beleghata circular canal which is drying up fast.
State urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya said Metro authorities will have to take responsibility of maintaining the Tolly's Nullah stretch where they have set up pillars for the extended tube route. "The Nullah is choking at many places due to debris. According to the earlier contract also, Metro authorities were responsible for the upkeep of this stretch. The chief secretary will hold a meeting on this and I will take stock later," Bhattacharya said.
Irigation minister Subhas Naskar said that they have already desilted Tolly's Nullah stretch from Garia to Baruipur spending Rs 17 crore. "In the second phase, work will take place from Baruipur to Suryapur at a cost of Rs 27 crore," Naskar said.
